Final Attempts to Hear from Mars Phoenix Scheduled

PASADENA, Calif. - From may possibly 17 to 21, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter long for conduct a fourth and final campaign to check on whether the Phoenix Mars Lander has come up to back to life.

For the duration of so as to full stop, Odyssey long for listen in in favor of a imply from Phoenix for the duration of 61 flights concluded the lander's spot on far-northern Mars. The orbiter detected nix transmission from the lander in the field of earlier campaigns toting up 150 overflights in the field of January, February and April.

In the field of 2008, Phoenix accomplished its three-month mission studying creature from outer space ice, soil and feeling. The lander worked in favor of five months facing bargain sunlight caused energy to turn out to be insufficient to keep the lander functioning. The solar-powered robot was not designed to last through the dark and cold conditions of a creature from outer space bitter winter. However, in the field of holder it did, NASA has used Odyssey to listen in in favor of the signals so as to Phoenix would transmit if abundant spring sunshine re-energized the lander.

Northern Mars long for experience its maximum-sunshine sunlight hours, the summer solstice, on may possibly 12 (Eastern stage; may possibly 13, Universal Time), so the sun long for come about superior in the field of the sky beyond Phoenix for the duration of the fourth listening campaign than for the duration of in the least of the preceding ones. Still, expectations of earshot from the lander continue low.

"To come about thorough, we categorical to conduct this final session around the stage of the summer solstice, for the duration of the superlative thermal and power conditions in favor of Phoenix," thought Chad Edwards, chief telecommunications engineer in favor of the Mars Exploration code by the side of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

The Phoenix mission is led by Principal Investigator Peter H. Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, with project management by the side of JPL and development corporation with Lockheed Martin deep space Systems. JPL, a division of the California Institute of know-how in the field of Pasadena, too manages the Odyssey project in the field of an operational corporation with Lockheed Martin.

7 of the World's Longest-Running Experiments

As soon as physicists by the side of Trinity College, Dublin, on track a viscosity research in the sphere of 1944, Franklin D. Roosevelt was president of the United States, humankind War II was well underway, and meet up Me in the sphere of St. Louis was tearing up the box headquarters.

Seventy years presently, single of the longest-running lab experiments in the sphere of the humankind has at length paid inedible: A camera has captured single dive of tar pitch falling from a conduit into a jar—for the very formerly stage.

The tar pitch had been placed in the sphere of the conduit by physicists in the sphere of 1944 to illustrate with the aim of pitch—a black, carbon-containing material with the aim of you might know because blacktop or else bitumen—was in point of fact not a solid, but a very, very slow-moving liquid by the side of space heat. (Related: "Fossil tawny Challenges Theories going on for goblet.")

Though drips and drops did form in excess of stage, they were in no way captured on camera—which would take part in definitively proved with the aim of pitch was a viscous liquid. A alike research conducted by physicists in the sphere of Queensland, Australia, in excess of the elapsed 86 years in addition yielded infrequent drops—but the drops were in no way jammed on capture on tape.

Enter Trinity College physicist Shane Bergin. Survive April, he firm to resolute up a webcam to watch the pitch. He in that case waited. And waited. And waited round about further. At length, on July 11, he aphorism single of the drips in point of fact dripping.

"My formerly design was, 'Gosh, I expectation the capture on tape camera was working,'" he assumed. "My back up was, 'I expectation the capture on tape was recording.' And it was. And in that case as soon as I aphorism the capture on tape, I was in point of fact amazed. I knew it was this phenomena with the aim of rebuff single had constantly seen."

Bergin says the long-running pitch research by the side of Trinity gets to the focal point of what did you say? Well brought-up science really is.

"We had so many folks approaching through the territory asking, 'When work out you think it's departure to spread?" he assumed. "We were taking bets in the sphere of a fun way because to as soon as it would spread, and it really got a lot in life of folks thinking and chatting going on for science."

Believe it or else not, the long-running pitch experiments conducted in the sphere of Ireland and Australia are in point of fact round about of the youngest of the oldest precise experiments taking place around the humankind. Beneath, we allocate a not many further of the longest-running seek projects (and precise oddities) at present underway.

The Ringing Bell

Since 1840, an experimental exciting bell has been ringing almost continuously in the sphere of the vestibule of the Clarendon Laboratory by the side of the University of Oxford. Called the Clarendon Dry quantity, the device is made up of two voltaic "dry piles" connected with an insulating layer of sulphur; the piles are connected, in the sphere of set, to two bells. The Guinness charge of Records deems the bell the "world's nearly everyone durable battery," though it choice eventually bring to a halt ringing as soon as either its clapper wears passй or else its electrochemical energy is exhausted.

The Beverly chronometer

Physics departments seem to pied-а-terre lots of long-running experiments, and the Beverly chronometer is rebuff exception. Sitting in the sphere of a vestibule by the side of the University of Otago in the sphere of Dunedin, new to the job Zealand, the atmospheric chronometer has not been wound since 1864 but continues to keep on ticking. (Though it has stopped occasionally, plus as soon as the physics territory misused locations.) (Related: "For a Second-Hand chronometer, It's formerly in the sphere of Reliability.")

Monitoring Vesuvius

How work out you television a sleeping giant? Carefully—and with lots of data going on for seismic pastime. That's what did you say? Employees of the Vesuvius Observatory take part in been measuring since 1841, in the sphere of order to predict slightly opportunity eruptions. The monitoring service used to take place located on the wall of the volcano itself but was motivated to Naples in the sphere of 1970. By the side of with the aim of service, scientists television several volcanoes, annoying to size up as soon as they might break out again. (Read: "Vesuvius Countdown.")

The William James Beal Germination research

In the sphere of 1879, American botanist William James Beal loaded up 20 bottles with a mix of rub down and seeds from a variety of plants. He in that case buried the bottles neck-down to prevent irrigate from entering the mix.

The crux of Beal's research? To determine whether seeds would still sprout in the same way as lasting undeveloped used for a very prolonged stage. Each five years by the side of formerly (but at present each 20 years), single of the bottles is dug up by researchers and the seeds are planted to perceive if no matter which grows. In the sphere of 2000, two of the 21 lodge species in the sphere of the bottle sprouted.

The subsequently bottle choice take place unearthed in the sphere of 2020, with the research slated to take place finished in the sphere of 2100.

Old Rotation of Cotton

Since 1896, scientists by the side of reddish-brown University in the sphere of Alabama take part in conducted a soil richness research on a one-acre plot of realm absolutely south of the campus. Listed on the citizen Register of Historic spaces, the "Old Rotation" research, because it's called, was the formerly to county show with the aim of a cotton and legume crop rotation may well support a cotton crop indefinitely.

Framingham focal point Study

Used for further than 65 years, thousands of men and women concerning the ages of 30 and 62 from Framingham, Massachusetts, take part in been monitored by researchers by the side of the citizen focal point, Lung, and Blood Institute and Boston University to check used for markers and menace factors of focal point disease. The ongoing monitoring of three generations of participants has helped researchers identify main menace factors used for cardiovascular disease.

Human medical experimentation in the United States: The shocking true history of modern medicine and psychiatry

The United States claims to come about the humankind leader in the sphere of medicine. But there's a dark margin to western medicine with the aim of only some poverty to acknowledge: The horrifying therapeutic experiments performed on poor introduce somebody to an area and their children all in the sphere of the VIP of technical progress. Many of these therapeutic experiments were conducted on introduce somebody to an area with no their experience, and nearly everyone were conducted in the same way as part of an effort to seek profits from newly permitted drugs or else therapeutic technologies.
At present, the therapeutic experiments persist on the U.S. Population and its children. From the pile drugging of children diagnosed with conjured behavioral disorders imaginary by psychoanalysis to the FDA's support of mass-marketed drugs with the aim of allow undergone rebuff legitimate clinical trials, our population is sincere at present being subjected to therapeutic experiments on a staggering range. At present, just about 50% of Americans are on a smallest amount single prescription drug, and just about 20% of schoolchildren are on mind-altering amphetamines like Ritalin or else antidepressants like Prozac. This pile medication of our population is, in the sphere of each way, a substantial therapeutic research taking place sincere at present.

But to honestly understand how this pile experimentation on new Americans came into being, you allow to take a close look by the side of the horrifying history of standard medicine's exploitation of introduce somebody to an area meant for cruel therapeutic experiments.

Cautioning: What did you say? You are not far off from to read is honestly shocking. You allow in no way been told this in a row by the American therapeutic connection, nor drug companies, nor the late afternoon news. You were in no way qualified the exactness not far off from standard medicine in the sphere of shared prepare, or else even by the side of some university. This is the dark secret of the U.S. Regularity of medicine, and once upon a time you read the factual accounts reported at this point, you might in no way trust drug companies again. These images are acutely disconcerting. We print them at this point not in the same way as a form of entertainment, but in the same way as a forbidding cautioning next to what did you say? Might go on to us and our children if we perform not restriction in the sphere of the horrifying, inhumane measures of huge Pharma and modern-day psychoanalysis.

At present, I introduce this shocking timeline, researched and authored by Dani truth, single of our many talented pole writers at this point by the side of exactness Publishing.

Make a Film Canister Rocket

Lone meaningless 35mm plastic film tin and lid. These are getting harder to learn, but provisions so as to develop film be supposed to get a few. (The pallid canisters act much better than the black ones get something done.) If you get thought verdict canisters, you can pick up them at this time.

Lone fizzing antacid tablet (such in the function of Alka-Seltzer - pick up this from your parents)
Fill with tears
Safety goggles

1. Leave on individuals safety goggles and take precedence outside - nix really, once this machinery, so as to film tin really flies! If you intend to try the internal version, get something done not drive the tin upside down in the field of step 5.

2. Break the antacid tablet in the field of partially.

3. Remove the lid from the film tin and leave a teaspoon (5 ml) of fill with tears into the tin.

Get something done the after that 2 steps quickly

4. Cut out the tablet partially into the tin and snap the cap on top of the tin (make indeed so as to it snaps on tightly.)

5. Quickly leave the tin on the ground CAP fringe DOWN and STEP BACK by smallest amount 2 meters.

6. Not far off from 10 seconds in a while, you determination hear a POP! And the film tin determination launch into the air!

Caution: If it does not launch, kill time by smallest amount 30 subsequent rather than examining the tin. Regularly the cap is not on close sufficient and the build up of chatter leaked ready.

There's nothing like a tiny rocket science to add a few excitement to the daylight. Once you add the fill with tears it starts to close the alka-seltzer tablet. This creates a chatter call carbon dioxide. In the function of the carbon dioxide is being released, it creates pressure inside the film tin. The other chatter so as to is made, the other pressure builds up until the cap it blasted down and the rocket is blasted up. This usage of thrust is how a real rocket machinery whether it is in the field of outer seat before at this time in the field of the earth's feeling. Of course of action, real rockets help rocket fuel. You can carry out trial scheming the rocket's path by addition fins and a nose shaft so as to you can fit in ready of paper. If you like this carry out trial, try the Exploding eat Bag. Take place safe and get fun!

The project on top of is a DEMONSTRATION. To fit in it a factual carry out trial, you can try to answer these questions:

1. Does fill with tears hotness affect how fast the rocket launches?
2. Does the size of the tablet part of a set affect how elongated it takes in favor of the rocket to launch?
3. Can the trip path take place controlled by addition fins before a nosecone to the tin?
4. How much fill with tears in the field of the tin determination furnish the highest trip?
5. How much fill with tears determination furnish the quickest launch?

Blowing Up Balloons With CO2

Element reactions give somebody no option but to in favor of certain big experiments. Give somebody no option but to employ of the carbon dioxide set sour by a baking juice and lemon juice effect by funnelling the swap gossip through a soft drink bottle and taking part in to your awaiting balloon! Sponsored relatives

What did you say? You'll need:
Balloon

A propos 40 ml of fill with tears (a cup is a propos 250 ml so you don't need much)

Soft drink bottle

Drinking straw

Juice from a lemon

1 teaspoon of baking juice

Orders:
Facing you start the ball rolling, give somebody no option but to loyal with the purpose of you stretch elsewhere the balloon to give somebody no option but to it in the role of undemanding in the role of workable to exaggerate.
Pour the 40 ml of fill with tears into the soft drink bottle.
Add the teaspoon of baking juice and stir it around with the straw until it has dissolved.
Pour the lemon juice taking part in and quickly set the stretched balloon finished the gate of the bottle.

What's episode?

If all goes well it follows that your balloon be supposed to exaggerate! Tally the lemon juice to the baking juice creates a element effect. The baking juice is a basis, while the lemon juice is an acid, while the two organization they create carbon dioxide (CO2). The swap gossip rises up and escapes through the soft drink bottle, it doesn't however get away the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up. If you don't suffer several lemons it follows that you can switch the lemon juice in favor of vinegar.

The Human Behavior Experiments with Alex Gibney

The soul Behavior Experiments, USA, 2006, 58 min, digital projection

Produced meant for risk television and the Sundance Channel, The soul Behavior Experiments revisits three famous behavioral studies to explore selected perennial questions not far off from why soul beings commit depraved acts under regard social conditions: Stanley Milgram’s compliance to authority experiments, in the sphere of which subjects willingly inflicted torture on one more person; Philip Zimbardo’s alarming prisoner and guard role-playing study by the side of Stanford; and Columbia University’s 1969 experiments which illuminated how being in the sphere of a crowd can cause a diffusion of moral reliability.

“The kind of analytical documentary indoctrination that’s too rare, sadly…” - Brian Lowry, VARIETY

Alex Gibney directed the 2008 Oscar-winning film “Taxi to the Dark Side” and the 2006 Oscar-nominated film “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the sphere of the space.” Other credits in the same way as director include Magnolia Pictures’ releases “Casino Jack and the United States of Money” and “Gonzo: The Life and do of Dr. Seeker S. Thompson.” His credits in the same way as producer include the Oscar-nominated “No conclusion in the sphere of Sight” (Executive Producer), “Who Killed the exciting Car?” (Consulting Producer), and “Herbie Hancock: Possibilities” (Producer).

In the sphere of 2010-2011, Gibney released four films in the same way as director: “My slip to Al-Qaeda,” based on the one-man take the part of by Lawrence Wright, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The threatening Tower”; “Client 9: The growth and Fall of Eliot Spitzer”; a segment on Sumo wrestling in the sphere of the omnibus film, “Freakonomics”; and “Magic Trip”, a measure travel concentration experience not far off from the famous 1964 car slip taken by knowledge Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. In the sphere of addition to the Oscar, Mr. Gibney has customary numerous other awards, plus the Grammy, multiple Emmys, the Peabody gift, and the DuPont-Columbia gift meant for Broadcast newspaper journalism.

Salimah El-Amin is a Producer and Emmy-award winning Film Researcher of theatrical and television documentaries and programs. Her do includes Fahrenheit 9/11, Taxi to the Dark margin, Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues, and Gonzo: The Life and do of Dr. Seeker S.Thompson. Added recently she produced the History Channel documentary How Bruce Lee misused the humankind and was the Film Researcher on the award-winning documentary Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest. She resides in the sphere of Manhattan with her companion and infantile young man.

Maury Silver  is a Visiting Professor by the side of Yeshiva College of Yeshiva University, customary his Doctorate working under Dr. Stanley Milgram by the side of the Graduate pivot of C.U.N.Y. In the sphere of 1977. His interests include ‘Ordinary introduce somebody to an area committing evil’, ‘The Social Psychology of emotions’, and ‘Little moralities of everyday life.’ With John Sabini he has in print two books: “Moralities of Everyday Life”–including the article,”The torturers take home conscience”– and “Emotion, Character, and reliability.”

Dr. Kate Porterfield customary her Ph.D. In the sphere of Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan, someplace she specialized in the sphere of teen and category medicine. Meant for the onwards 12 years, she has worked in the same way as a clinician by the side of the Bellevue/NYU plan meant for Survivors of Torture someplace she provides personal and category therapy to children, adolescents and adults affected by war ordeal and torture. Dr. Porterfield has worked in the same way as a clinical evaluator on several personal belongings of infantile introduce somebody to an area held in the sphere of custody by the side of Guantanamo Bay in the same way as well in the same way as several other “war on terror” personal belongings and she regularly consults with attorneys behavior personal belongings concerning torture and mistreatment. She has in addition presented extensively in the sphere of the contemporary York area and nationally on topics such in the same way as the personal property of war and person in exile ordeal on children, clinical do with traumatized person in exile families, and the psychological personal property of torture. Dr. Porterfield is the Chair of the American Psychological Association’s Task Force on the Psychosocial personal property of War on Children Residing in the sphere of the United States.

Human Behavior Experiments': What Can Be Done in the Name of Obedience

Dr. Stanley Milgram's infamous "electroshock" experiments by the side of Yale in the sphere of the 1960's revealed a moment ago how banal the ordinariness of evil is. "Human Behavior" shows black-and-white clips from folks studies, and in addition reports on other, even added disconcerting, experiments.

The fragility of soul kindness and general discern was exposed again in the sphere of 1971 by Dr. Philip G. Zimbardo, a social psychologist by the side of Stanford who recruited a crowd of student men to take the part of guards and prisoners in the sphere of a simulated prison. In the sphere of a lesser amount of than a week many of the guards had of their own concurrence bowed sadistic, while prisoners grew anxious and disturbed. Selected of the photographs from with the aim of study are shrilly related to the Abu Ghraib snapshots: Naked prisoners posed in the sphere of sexually humiliating positions with bags in excess of their heads.

But the nearly everyone alarming scenes of all were jammed by a surveillance camera in the sphere of the back headquarters of a McDonald's restaurant in the sphere of Mt. Washington, Ky., in the sphere of 2004. A prankster posing in the same way as a patrol official — in excess of the phone — instructed an assistant director, Donna Jean Summers, to strip-search a teenage employee the imposter thought was a thief; by the conclusion of the late afternoon the caller had in addition persuaded Ms. Summers' fiancé to abuse the employee and force her to do oral gender. Nearly everyone shocking of all, by the side of smallest amount 70 other introduce somebody to an area in the sphere of fast food restaurants were duped into committing other kinds of offenses.

"Unless you are position in the sphere of with the aim of position by the side of with the aim of measure, how perform you know what did you say? You would perform?" Ms. Summers thought in the sphere of an interview. "You don't."

Many news articles and documentaries allow tried to evaluate what did you say? Went in the wrong by the side of Abu Ghraib. Nearly everyone concluded with the aim of ill-trained soldiers were under gigantic pressure to congealed the kind of conditions with the aim of would superlative extract in a row from prisoners, but with no take home guidelines on how.

"Human Behavior," in black and white and produced by Alex Gibney, who in addition made "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the sphere of the space," fills in the sphere of selected of the psychological blanks by illustrating how, in the sphere of several circumstances, introduce somebody to an area readily act upon even far-fetched commands. Nearly everyone of all, the film shows how by a long shot introduce somebody to an area lose perspective and main decency whilst in the sphere of the grip of a credible authority personage or else even a moment ago a hard crowd dynamic.

Old film taken from interviews with Dr. Milgram, who died in the sphere of 1984, divulge a mild, to some extent pedantic operate with huge glasses and a chin beard, who explains with the aim of the Holocaust made him poverty to understand better how it was on the cards meant for ordinary introduce somebody to an area to perform "callously and callously." He congealed available to study authority and explore, in the same way as he position it, "under what did you say? Conditions may well a person act upon, whilst commanded, measures with the aim of went next to conscience."

He devised a study in the sphere of which subjects delivered what did you say? They accepted wisdom were heavy-going exciting jolts to a fellow participant, purely for the reason that they were encouraged to perform so by the scientist in the sphere of charge who self-assured them it was crucial meant for a learning research. The film shows single middle-aged operate balking next trial what did you say? He thinks is the subject matter crying in the sphere of torture (in truth it is a recording), but many added — not far off from 60 percent — keep increasing the torture levels under calm but corporation tutoring from the experimenter, "Continue, please."

Dr. Zimbardo's prison study was even added shocking, if lone for the reason that the students assigned to take the part of guards were not instructed to come about abusive, and as a substitute conformed to their own notions of how to keep order in the sphere of a prison: "Lord of the Flies" in the sphere of sideburns and aviator sunglasses. The prisoners were blindfolded, stripped, assigned records and enforced to wear meager sanatorium gowns and ankle chains. The guards were prearranged handcuffs, whistles and billy clubs. The scientists customary a shocking show of how, in the same way as single of them position it, "human nature transformed in the sphere of a very rapid way in the sphere of the stand in front of of a very powerful position."

The abuse kept back growing until, on the fourth sunlight hours, it bowed into sexual degradation. Prisoners began infringement down. Dr. Zimbardo and his team were so occupied by the research with the aim of they too lost sight of truth. In the sphere of the film Dr. Zimbardo recalls with the aim of it was not until his girlfriend visited the mock prison and threatened to break up with him with the aim of he snapped available of it and ended the study basic.

The Stanford students knew they were taking part in the sphere of a psychology research. Soldiers assigned to guard prisoners by the side of Abu Ghraib were told with the aim of the survival of comrades on the front outline depended on whether they may well break the prisoners. Dr. Zimbardo, who in the sphere of 2004 served in the same way as an expert witness in the sphere of the risk antagonistic of pole Sgt. Ivan Frederick II, who was convicted of assault, indecent acts and dilapidation of duty by the side of Abu Ghraib, thought he was "an ordinary talented chap who gets into this place and is thoroughly sullied."

The documentary uses several personal belongings, from the 1964 murder of pool Genovese, whilst 38 neighbors in the sphere of Queens heard or else saying parts of the fatal attack and did nothing, to a 2005 hazing ritual with the aim of killed Matthew Carrington, a 21-year-old learner by the side of California State University, Chico, to be a spit not far off from herd mentality: With the aim of introduce somebody to an area who might let somebody have help whilst by themselves willpower, amongst others, grasp back and check on the cues of a majority. The person who goes next to the crowd or else defies authority is a rarity.

"It is the majority who conform, who comply, who act upon authority," Dr. Zimbardo says. "And that's what did you say? Minion wants to hear."

With the aim of reach a decision is certainly something nearly everyone introduce somebody to an area like better to put behind you. "Human Behavior" is a enthralling, if upsetting, reminder.

WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?

THE ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere is the mixture of gas molecules and other materials surrounding the earth. It is made mostly of the gases nitrogen (78%), and oxygen (21%). Argon gas and water (in the form of vapor, droplets and ice crystals) are the next most common things. There are also small amounts of other gases, plus many small solid particles, like dust, soot and ashes, pollen, and salt from the oceans.

The composition of the atmosphere varies, depending on your location, the weather, and many other things. There may be more water in the air after a rainstorm, or near the ocean. Volcanoes can put large amounts of dust particles high into the atmosphere. Pollution can add different gases or dust and soot.

The atmosphere is densest (thickest) at the bottom, near the Earth. It gradually thins out as you go higher and higher up. There is no sharp break between the atmosphere and space.

LIGHT WAVES

Light is a kind of energy that radiates, or travels, in waves. Many different kinds of energy travel in waves. For example, sound is a wave of vibrating air. Light is a wave of vibrating electric and magnetic fields. It is one small part of a larger range of vibrating electromagnetic fields. This range is called the electromagnetic spectrum.

Electromagnetic waves travel through space at 299,792 km/sec (186,282 miles/sec). This is called the speed of light.

The energy of the radiation depends on its wavelength and frequency. Wavelength is the distance between the tops (crests) of the waves. Frequency is the number of waves that pass by each second. The longer the wavelength of the light, the lower the frequency, and the less energy it contains.

COLORS OF LIGHT

Visible light is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that our eyes can see. Light from the sun or a light bulb may look white, but it is actually a combination of many colors. We can see the different colors of the spectrum by splitting the light with a prism. The spectrum is also visible when you see a rainbow in the sky.

The colors blend continuously into one another. At one end of the spectrum are the reds and oranges. These gradually shade into yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The colors have different wavelengths, frequencies, and energies. Violet has the shortest wavelength in the visible spectrum. That means it has the highest frequency and energy. Red has the longest wavelength, and lowest frequency and energy.

LIGHT IN THE AIR

Light travels through space in a straight line as long as nothing disturbs it. As light moves through the atmosphere, it continues to go straight until it bumps into a bit of dust or a gas molecule. Then what happens to the light depends on its wave length and the size of the thing it hits.

Dust particles and water droplets are much larger than the wavelength of visible light. When light hits these large particles, it gets reflected, or bounced off, in different directions. The different colors of light are all reflected by the particle in the same way. The reflected light appears white because it still contains all of the same colors.

Gas molecules are smaller than the wavelength of visible light. If light bumps into them, it acts differently. When light hits a gas molecule, some of it may get absorbed. After awhile, the molecule radiates (releases, or gives off) the light in a different direction. The color that is radiated is the same color that was absorbed. The different colors of light are affected differently. All of the colors can be absorbed. But the higher frequencies (blues) are absorbed more often than the lower frequencies (reds). This process is called Rayleigh scattering. (It is named after Lord John Rayleigh, an English physicist, who first described it in the 1870's.)

WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?

The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.

However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

As you look closer to the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light must pass through more air. Some of it gets scattered away again in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white.

THE BLACK SKY AND WHITE SUN

On Earth, the sun appears yellow. If you were out in space, or on the moon, the sun would look white. In space, there is no atmosphere to scatter the sun's light. On Earth, some of the shorter wavelength light (the blues and violets) are removed from the direct rays of the sun by scattering. The remaining colors together appear yellow.

Also, out in space, the sky looks dark and black, instead of blue. This is because there is no atmosphere. There is no scattered light to reach your eyes.

WHY IS THE SUNSET RED?

As the sun begins to set, the light must travel farther through the atmosphere before it gets to you. More of the light is reflected and scattered. As less reaches you directly, the sun appears less bright. The color of the sun itself appears to change, first to orange and then to red. This is because even more of the short wavelength blues and greens are now scattered. Only the longer wavelengths are left in the direct beam that reaches your eyes.

The sky around the setting sun may take on many colors. The most spectacular shows occur when the air contains many small particles of dust or water. These particles reflect light in all directions. Then, as some of the light heads towards you, different amounts of the shorter wavelength colors are scattered out. You see the longer wavelengths, and the sky appears red, pink or orange.

STATIC ELECTRICITY EXPERIMENTS & PROJECTS

PROJECT 1 - Swinging cereal
What you need:a hard rubber or plastic comb, or a balloon
thread, small pieces of dry cereal (O-shapes, or puffed rice of wheat)
What to do: Tie a piece of the cereal to one end of a 12 inch piece of thread. Find a place to attach the other end so that the cereal does not hang close to anything else. (You can tape the thread to the edge of a table but check with your parents first.)
Wash the comb to remove any oils and dry it well.
Charge the comb by running it through long, dry hair several times, or vigorously rub the comb on a wool sweater.
Slowly bring the comb near the cereal. It will swing to touch the comb. Hold it still until the cereal jumps away by itself.
Now try to touch the comb to the cereal again. It will move away as the comb approaches.
This project can also be done by substituting a balloon for the comb.
What Happened: Combing your hair moved electrons from your hair to the comb. The comb had a negative static charge. The neutral cereal was attracted to it. When they touched, electrons slowly moved from the comb to the cereal. Now both objects had the same negative charge, and the cereal was repelled.

PROJECT 2 - Bending water
What you need:a hard rubber or plastic comb, or a balloon
a sink and water faucet.
What to do: Turn on the faucet so that the water runs out in a small, steady stream, about 1/8 inch thick.
Charge the comb by running it through long, dry hair several times or rub it vigorously on a sweater.
Slowly bring the comb near the water and watch the water "bend."
This project can also be done using a balloon instead of the comb.
What happened: The neutral water was attracted to the charged comb, and moved towards it.

PROJECT 3 - Light a light bulb with a balloon
You Need: hard rubber comb or balloon
a dark room
fluorescent light bulb (not an incandescent bulb)

SAFETY NOTE: DO NOT USE ELECTRICITY FROM A WALL OUTLET FOR THIS EXPERIMENT. Handle the glass light bulb with care to avoid breakage. The bulb can be wrapped in sticky, transparent tape to reduce the chance of injury if it does break.

What to do: Take the light bulb and comb into the dark room.
Charge the comb on your hair or sweater. Make sure to build up a lot of charge for this experiment.
Touch the charged part of the comb to the light bulb and watch very carefully. You should be able to see small sparks. Experiment with touching different parts of the bulb.
What happened: When the charged comb touched the bulb, electrons moved from it to the bulb, causing the small sparks of light inside. In normal operation, the electrons to light the bulb come from the electrical power lines through a wire in the end of the tube. (Fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs will be discussed in a future issue.)

PROJECT 4 - Static in the Summer
What you need:a balloon, and a watch or clock
What you do: Rub the balloon on your hair or sweater. Stick it to a wall and time how long it stays before falling down.
Repeat step (1) in the bathroom, just after someone has taken a hot, steamy shower.
What happened: In the bathroom, water in the air and on the walls helped move electrons away from the balloon more quickly. In the summer, the air is more humid, and static electricity does not build up as much as during the winter, when the air is very dry.

Autumn Leaves Science Projects Experiment

What you need:
leaves, small jars (baby food jars work well)
covers for jars or aluminum foil or plastic wrap
rubbing alcohol, paper coffee filters
shallow pan, hot tap water, tape, pen
plastic knife or spoon, clock or timer.
 What you do:
Collect 2-3 large leaves from several different trees. Tear or chop the leaves into very small pieces and put them into small jars labeled with the name or location of the tree.
Add enough rubbing alcohol to each jar to cover the leaves. Using a plastic knife or spoon, carefully chop and grind the leaves in the alcohol.
SAFETY NOTE: Isopropyl rubbing alcohol can be harmful if mishandled or misused. Read and carefully follow all warnings on the alcohol bottle.
Cover the jars very loosely with lids or plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place the jars carefully into a shallow tray containing 1 inch of hot tap water.
SAFETY NOTE: Hot water above 150 F can quickly cause severe burns. Experts recommend setting your water heater thermostat no higher than 125 F.
Keep the jars in the water for at least a half-hour, longer if needed, until the alcohol has become colored (the darker the better). Twirl each jar gently about every five minutes. Replace the hot water if it cools off.
Cut a long thin strip of coffee filter paper for each of the jars and label it.
Remove jars from water and uncover. Place a strip of filter paper into each jar so that one end is in the alcohol. Bend the other end over the top of the jar and secure it with tape.
The alcohol will travel up the paper, bringing the colors with it. After 30-90 minutes (or longer), the colors will travel different distances up the paper as the alcohol evaporates. You should be able to see different shades of green, and possibly some yellow, orange or red, depending on the type of leaf.
Remove the strips of paper, let them dry and then tape them to a piece of plain paper. Save them for the next project.

PROJECT 2 - Separate Colors in a Fall Leaf using Chromatography
What you need: same as Project 1.

 What you do:
Repeat step (1)-(8) from Project 1, this time using leaves that have changed color. You may have to wait much longer in steps (4) and (7). There is normally much less of the other colors in the leaves compared to the green chlorophyll.

PROJECT 3 - Observe how light affects color development
 What you need:
a tree with leaves that turn red in autumn
aluminum foil or heavy paper and masking tape.
 What you do:
Before the leaves turn colors in the fall, find a maple tree, flowering dogwood, sweet gum, or other tree or shrub that you know will turn bright red or purple.
Find several leaves that receive bright sunlight, and cover part of them with foil or heavy paper and tape.
After the leaves have changed color, remove the covering and observe the different colors underneath. These are the colors that were in the leaf all summer. The bright reds and purples are only made in the fall, with exposure to light.

illegal human experiments MILLOY: EPA’s

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been sued in federal court for allegedly conducting illegal experiments on human beings. The case tests whether a government agency can violate the law and the most sacrosanct ethics of scientific research — and get away scot-free.

Based on thousands of pages of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, since 2004 and continuing through the Obama administration, the EPA intentionally has been exposing dozens, if not hundreds, of human subjects to extraordinarily high levels of air pollutants such as diesel exhaust and fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5. The experiments occurred at an EPA facility located on the campus of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Many of the study subjects were health-impaired — suffering from asthma, metabolic syndrome, old age (up to 75 years) or, worse, combinations of those factors. They were all financially needy, since they enrolled in the experiments for compensation of $12 per hour.

Since 1997, the EPA has regulated PM2.5, which is also a major component of diesel exhaust, on the basis that it kills people. In 2004, the EPA determined that PM2.5 could kill on a short-term basis — i.e., within hours or days of exposure. The EPA also determined in 2004 that there is no safe level of exposure to PM2.5. That is, any inhalation of PM2.5 can kill. EPA says health-impaired people and the elderly are most vulnerable to the effects of PM2.5. EPA also says the evidence is strong that PM2.5 and diesel exhaust cause cancer.

The chairman of EPA's Clean Air Scientific Advisory Council, Dr. Jonathan M. Samet, wrote in a 2011 commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine that there is no safe exposure to PM2.5, a view reiterated to House Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton, Michigan Republican, in a February 2012 letter by EPA’s air chief, Gina McCarthy.

EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson testified in Congress in September 2011, “Particulate matter causes premature death. It doesn’t make you sick. It’s directly causal to dying sooner than you should.” She also testified, “If we could reduce particulate matter to levels that are healthy, we would have an identical impact to finding a cure for cancer.” Cancer kills about 570,000 people in the U.S. annually, according to the American Cancer Society.

EPA does more than just say bad things about PM2.5 and diesel exhaust. It has issued stringent multibillion-dollar regulations that limit emissions. In addition to setting national air quality standards, which EPA is in the process of tightening, the agency has issued many rules during the Obama administration, the two biggest being the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule and the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards. EPA’s cost-benefit justification for both rules depends entirely on its condemnation of PM2.5 as a killer.

In addition to testing the lethal and cancer-causing PM2.5 and diesel exhaust on frail and needy people, the EPA failed to inform the study subjects that it had determined that those substances were so deadly and toxic.

While EPA repeatedly over many years has told the public and Congress that PM2.5 can kill within hours of exposure, the agency only told the study subjects, for example, “You may experience some minor degree of airway irritation, cough or shortness of breath or wheezing. These symptoms typically disappear two to four hours after exposure, but may last longer for particularly sensitive people.”

One obese woman with a personal and family history of heart disease developed a cardiac arrhythmia during her experiment. She was rushed to the hospital for an overnight stay. The EPA, in a published report, attributed her heart problem to PM2.5, but it then failed to warn subsequent human subjects of the risks of cardiac arrhythmia.

In its lawsuit against the EPA, the nonprofit American Tradition Institute asserts that all this conduct runs afoul of virtually every rule and ethical standard established since World War II and the Tuskegee syphilis experiments to protect human study subjects from rogue and abusive scientific research.

In answer to the lawsuit, EPA included a declaration in which the clinical studies coordinator claims to verbally warn study subjects right before experimentation, “There is the possibility you may die from this.” In addition to the shocking nature of this “warning,” even if it were acceptable to risk the lives of human study subjects for the sake of science, such a warning would need to be in writing, according to the Common Rule.

EPA also has potential civil liability to the study subjects and criminal liability for fraud and assault and battery. While the mere testing of such toxic substances clearly is prohibited, EPA has compounded wrongdoing with its failure to obtain informed consent.

So if PM2.5 and diesel exhaust are, in fact, as dangerous as EPA says, the agency could face serious legal liabilities. The only way the agency wouldn’t face those liabilities would be if it has been grossly misleading the public, and Congress and PM2.5 and diesel exhaust aren’t really so toxic after all.

At least three of the EPA researchers involved in these experiments are North Carolina-licensed physicians. The North Carolina Medical Board has opened an investigation. The University of North Carolina School of Medicine, which provided EPA with the required institutional review board for approving the experiments, has commenced its own inquiry. In contrast, the Obama-appointed Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues has refused so far to get involved, despite multiple requests, claiming it already has a full agenda.

Human Experiments Evil

The Stanford prison experiment was a psychological study of human responses to captivity, and its behavioral effects on both authorities and inmates. Undergraduate volunteers played the roles of both guards and prisoners living in a mock prison. Prisoners and guards rapidly adapted to their roles, and soon stepped beyond the boundaries of what had been predicted, leading to dangerous and psychologically damaging situations.

9. The Monster Study

The Monster Study was an experiment conducted on 22 orphan children in 1939. Half of the children were given positive speech therapy, in which the fluency of their speech was praised. The other half were belittled for every speech imperfection and told they were stutterers. Many of the normal speaking orphan children who received negative therapy suffered negative psychological effects and some retained speech problems during the course of their life.

8. Project 4.1

Project 4.1 was a medical study conducted by the United States of residents of the Marshall Islands exposed to radioactive fallout from the nuclear test at Bikini Atoll. In the decades that followed, children began to suffer disproportionately from thyroid cancer (due to exposure to radioiodines), and almost a third of those exposed developed neoplasms. A Department of Energy report concluded that, “The dual purpose of what is now a DOE medical program has led to a view by the Marshallese that they were being used as ‘guinea pigs’ in a ‘radiation experiment.’”

7. Project MKULTRA

Project MKULTRA, or MK-ULTRA, was the code name for a CIA mind-control research program. There is much published evidence that the project involved the surreptitious use of many types of drugs to manipulate individual mental states and to alter brain function. Experiments included administering LSD to CIA employees, military personnel, doctors, other government agents, prostitutes, mentally ill patients, and members of the general public in order to study their reactions. LSD and other drugs were usually administered without the subject’s knowledge or consent.

6. The Aversion Project

South Africa’s apartheid army forced white *** and gay soldiers to undergo ’sex-change’ operations in the 1970s and the 1980s, and submitted many to chemical castration, electric shock, and other unethical medical experiments. As many as 900 forced ’sexual reassignment’ operations may have been performed as part of a top-secret program to root out homosexuality from the service.

5. North Korean Experimentation

There have been many reports of North Korean human experimentation. One former North Korean woman prisoner tells how 50 healthy women prisoners were forced to eat poisoned cabbage leaves. All 50 were dead after 20 minutes of vomiting blood and anal bleeding. Kwon Hyok, a former prison head of security at Camp 22, described laboratories equipped respectively for poison gas, suffocation gas and blood experiments, in which three or four people, normally a family, were the experimental subjects.

4. Poison Laboratory of the Soviets

The Poison laboratory of the Soviet secret services, also known as Laboratory 1, Laboratory 12 and “The Chamber,” was a covert poison research and development facility. The Soviets tested a number of deadly poisons on prisoners, including mustard gas, ricin, and digitoxin.

3. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study

The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male was a clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Nearly 400 poor African American sharecroppers were denied treatment for syphilis so that the effects could be examined. This study became notorious and led to major changes in how patients are protected in clinical studies.

2. Unit 731

Unit 731 was a covert biological and chemical warfare research unit of the Imperial Japanese Army. Some of the numerous atrocities committed included vivisection of living people, including pregnant women who were impregnated by the doctors, limbs amputated and reattached, and humans used as living test cases for grenades and flame throwers. Prisoners were also injected with strains of diseases to study their effects.

1. Nazi Experiments

Medical experimentation was conducted on large numbers of people by the German Nazi regime in its concentration camps during World War II. Dr. Josef Mengele performed experiments on over 1,500 sets of imprisoned twins; fewer than 200 individuals survived these studies. The tests ranged from the injection of different chemicals into the eyes of the twins to see if it would change their colors, to literally sewing the twins together in hopes of creating conjoined twins. Other experiments included forcing subjects to endure a tank of ice water for up to three hours to test hypothermia treatments, and infecting wounds with bacteria to test antibacterial treatments.
